Direct debit payments on the Automated Clearing House (ACH), or ACH debits, allow businesses to collect funds from customers in the US who provide their bank account details and authorize businesses to debit them.

ACH debits are the second non-card Payment Method to be added to WP Simple Pay. ACH debits offer you lower transaction fees than cards. They also offer more flexibility for customers. ACH payments on Stripe cost 0.80%, capped at $5, with no monthly fees or verification fees. A $100 payment incurs a $0.80 fee. Any payment above $625 incurs only $5 in fees.

Payment Amount Credit Card Fee ACH Debit Fee
$100 $3.20 $0.80
$1,000 $29.30 $5.00

Lower fees and support for recurring payments make ACH debits a great solution for fundraising and donations where every penny counts.

ACH debits in WP Simple Pay are powered by Plaid, a Stripe partner. Plaid allows for authentication directly with the customer’s bank in real-time.

ACH debits can fail, or can be disputed by customers after the payment was initially completed. Businesses should carefully consider accepting ACH debit payments. Here are two examples of business models well suited for ACH debits:

  • Software-as-a-service subscriptions or
  • Regular donations to not-for-profit organizations

More payment methods coming

WP Simple Pay Pro will be adding support for SOFORT, SEPA Direct Debit, Giropay, Alipay, OXXO, and more. As always with software releases, timing will be based on user demand and effort required to implement.

Per-form test mode toggles

WP Simple Pay offers the ability to collect test payments in Stripe by enabling “Test Mode” in the settings. This allows you to test credit card numbers on your Payment Forms to ensure the payment flow is set up exactly how you need.

In previous versions, you would have to toggle all forms to Test Mode to test a form. Now you can test just one form at a time.

Payment Forms set to a non-global Payment Mode will show a special badge indicating the current state.

Form builder improvements

Along with expanding Payment Methods one of WP Simple Pay’s continuous goals is expanding and improving the Payment Form builder. WP Simple Pay 3.9.0 adds the following form builder improvements:

  • Assign field labels by default (instead of placeholders) for better accessibility
  • Output field labels for screen readers if visual label is hidden
  • Improved styling consistency
  • (optional) indicator on non-required fields
